Battlefield 3 is one of the coolest shooters ever made. Period. If you don’t own it yet, you should. If $60 is too much for you, EA and DICE have quite the deal for you this weekend.

From tomorrow (December 23rd) until the end of Christmas day, Battlefield 3 will be 50% off when purchased via EA’s online store Origin.

Thanks to America’s shortsighted politicians the Russians have officially won the space race. So I guess it makes sense that in this new sci-fi short film they’re in the driver’s seat when aliens contact Earth. Things don’t go very well, and Goliath inadvertently makes a pretty good case for why America might want to get back into space… before the Russians doom us all.

But really, Goliath is just a fun little short film made by a guy who taught himself how to do special effects and basically put the whole thing together for only $150. Not bad. Take a look…

Running out of shopping days before Christmas? In dire need of a gift for that special Star Wars fan in your life? Got $30,000 or so lying around just gathering dust? If so, you could take home Obi-Wan’s lightsaber from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace! Well, one of them, anyway.

The distinctive prop has popped up in the catalogue of venerable auction-house magazine Bonhams, and it will be going up for public auction on December 15th. In case you won’t be in the neighborhood of their Knightsbridge auction house, bidding will also be available online. Here’s a shot of what you’ll be throwing down five figures for: Lot No. 110, Obi-Wan’s “fighting lightsaber” from The Phantom Menace.

This shortened version was used by Ewan McGregor in the close-quarter fight scenes. As a longer blade had proved impractical for these sequences, this smaller type was made. It had sufficient green blade for the special effects team to generate the glowing light effect.

Now sure, that picture makes it look like you’d be spending thirty grand on one of those light-up toy plastic lightsabers you see little kids and/or dateless teenagers using to sword-fight in parking lots. But no, this is the real McCoy (whoops, wrong franchise). The prop is made of molded and painted resin, and the blade is just what it looks like: green plastic. Naturally, it will come with a snazzy display case, background info about the prop, and a certificate of authenticity.

Okay, let’s face it, none of us reading this are probably going to be bidding on a prop that costs more than some people make in a year. But it’s nice to dream, and a screen-used prop is one hell of a cool collectible. Even if it is from the worst Star Wars movie ever made.

A set of Xbox Live users have discovered a way of blocking the adverts that appear on the Xbox 360 dashboard after its recent update.

The major complaint regarding the new look dashboard is the slightly obtrusive adverts that appear while navigating. Users over on Reddit have gone straight to the source and blocked the service that Microsoft use to send the adverts to consoles. If you wish to use this method you can by following these instructions:

1. Sign up for a free OpenDNS account.
2. Add a network for your current IP address.
3. Go to Advanced Settings and next to ‘Domain Typos’, check the box ‘Enable typo correction’ if it’s not already checked and apply.
4. Go to Web Content Filtering settings and set the filtering level to ‘None’, and under ‘Manage individual domains’, put rad.msn.com and select ‘Always block’ and then click ‘Add domain’. Screenshot.
5. On your Xbox, go to System Settings -> Network Settings -> (your connection) -> Configure Network -> DNS settings -> Manual, and enter the OpenDNS IP addresses for the primary and secondary DNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
6. You may need to clear your hard drive cache before ads disappear entirely: System Settings -> Storage -> Hard Drive -> press Y -> Clear System Cache (note that you’ll have to re-download any title updates for any games you play after doing this).

OUR OPINION: With a $60.00 annual fee to use Live services, loosing the ads is great news!

We (Stan – site creator; Sean – a friend) are taking a shot at film! We acquired a bunch of cameras, equipment, programs, and helpers to make any random film idea we have come to life.

For our first film. we decided to start easy and do a short, mind crazy, documentary about Sean’s parents house.  A large company has decided that they want to build a road right through their property which would split their pasture in half and knock down their garage. After a long legal battle they eventually came to a settlement because there was no way to keep the company from building the road.

The documentary was filmed using an iPhone 4s to test out it’s 1080p recording quality.
